2016 Toyota Sienna Makes a Great Road Companion
I took the 2016 Toyota Sienna LTD Premium on a trip to my daughter’s last week. She lives in Lakeway, west of Austin. I couldn’t have asked for a better traveling companion than Sienna. Painted “Predawn Gray” with Mica and brown wood interior, the large SUV wrapped me in soothing comfort. I stayed serene even when the traffic backed up. Or when I found myself taking a wrong turn, driving unfamiliar back country roads.
I even went 30 miles in the wrong direction once, but it was worth it! I saw gorgeous displays of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and other wildflowers on those country roads. Nature lovers in Texas owe a big thank you to Lady Bird Johnson for her wildflower campaign.
Ensconced in comfort with great AC, a dual moon roof, and XM radio playing my favorite tunes, I refused to be upset by the delay. But I did decide to pay more attention to the road and the Entune Navigation system.
The Sienna operates on a 3.5 Liter DOHC 24-valve Dual VVT-I V8 engine, providing plenty of power for passing. Its 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and 18″ alloy wheels offer a smooth ride even when the road gets bumpy. HiD headlights with LED and daytime running lights add another layer of safety to a drive. Sienna also features blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert.
Sienna had some great safety and convenience features, perfect for a road trip. It has a power lift gate for easy loading and unloading. The sliding doors on both sides of the Sienna also open and close by pushing a button on the key fob.
Premium leather trimmed seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel add an elegant look and feel to the interior. The Sienna has Star Safety System with stability and traction control. Other features such as anti-lock brake system and smart stop technology add to safety. The advanced airbag system provides 8 airbags including driver’s knee and rear side curtain. Safety Connect provides front and rear parking sonar and a rear view camera.
While I didn’t have passengers or enough luggage to use this feature, the second row captain’s chairs can be stowed in one easy motion. Dual view Blu-Ray back seat entertainment was another nice touch for families with kids. LATCH is available to keep the younger passengers secure.
Fuel economy averaged 19 mpg, 16 in town and 23 on the highway (or 5.3 gallons per 100 miles). The MSRP for the Sienna LTD premium all wheel drive, with seating for 7 passengers, is $46,410. The manufacturer had added options such as roof rack cross bars and mudguard that brought the test vehicle’s price (including destination charges) to $49,301.
