75th Anniversary Jeep Wrangler a True American Icon

Santa’s sled isn’t nearly as iconic as the 75th anniversary edition of the Jeep Wrangler 4X4.   Painted in Sarge Green with a black interior, you are instantly reminded of the important role Jeep played in U. S. history.  Those Army Jeeps were front and center as our troops fought to defend the rights and safety of Americans since WWII.

That’s why I did a double take when the driver pulled the military-looking Jeep Wrangler into my drive.  It felt like a salute was in order!

This Wrangler is built for action, with a 3.6 liter V6 24-valve VVT engine and 5-speed automatic transmission. It has Command Trac® so you can shift on the fly, heavy-duty axles and a 22.5-gallon fuel tank.  Advanced airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist and electronic roll mitigation add to the security of driver and passengers in all types of terrain or weather conditions.

With all the Wrangler’s off-road capabilities, it seemed a shame to only drive it on such tame errands as trips to the mall or the movies.   However, the Wrangler soldiered on and didn’t complain at spending a quiet, tame week in the city.

It is not possible to drive the Wrangler inconspicuously, though.  Most folks react in some way when they see the iconic Jeep.  While no one saluted, everyone had positive comments to make.  Apparently the anniversary edition Wrangler brought back memories of their first Jeep, or their uncle’s Jeep, or seeing one in a Korean war movie.

The 2016 Wrangler Unlimited was ready to live up to its motto of “Go Anywhere, Do Anything,” and adapted easily to city life.  The black seats were plush leather with Ombre Mesh cloth, and the steering wheel was wrapped in leather.  The 2016 Wrangler wasn’t out of place at even the most upscale shopping centers.

The base price for the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4X4 75th edition is $33,795.  However, the manufacturer had added optional features, including the 75th anniversary package at $4,600.  A dual top group that included both hard and soft tops added $1,785.  The anniversary package included 17” bronze wheels, various badges, heated front seats, special painted grill and bumper, and connectivity package.

Other welcome added options were hill descent control, Alpine premium 9-speakers with all-weather subwoofer, a 6.5 inch touchscreen display with GPS navigation, and remote start system.  The total MSRP for the test model (including destination charges) was $48,630.

Fuel economy was estimated at 16 mpg in town and 20 on the highway, for an average of 18 mpg.
