New Nissan Titan XD Uses Cummins diesel engine

Titan with Cummins diesel engineSome members of the Texas Auto Writers recently toured the Cummins Engine Plant in Columbus, Indiana, a city of 40,000+, at the request of Nissan’s Steve Parrett. The plant is gearing up to make the new Turbo Diesel Engine that will power Nissan’s 2016 Titan XD.

This plant is not only the largest industry in the picturesque town of Columbus, but they also make great neighbors. For over a century now, the owners have poured funds into new architecture as well as restoring properties and historic buildings in the town.  All while hiring numerous factory workers.

Always ahead of the curve, Clessie Cummins first invented diesel technology in 1919, and his Diesel engines are the first to meet 2014 greenhouse gas and fuel economy regulations a year ahead of schedule.

The 2016 Nissan TITAN XD, which made its world debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is set to shake up the highly competitive full-size pickup segment when it goes on sale in the United States and Canada beginning in late 2015 - with a bold all-new design that stakes out a unique position in the segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries.

One reason for their enthusiasm, of course, is the niche the new 5.0 Liter V8 Cummins Diesel engine-operated Titan XD will fill. Company spokesman said there’s long been a vacancy between heavy duty pickup trucks that many operators need to perform their tasks, and full-size trucks.  They are promoting the Titan V8 as an entirely “new class” of truck.

Fred Diaz, senior VP Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations U.S., Nissan North America, said, “This new Nissan Titan XD is designed to offer buyers something the others don’t–combining outstanding towing and hauling capabilities and exceptional towing and hauling fuel economy.  It also offers excellent ride comfort and handling, and the features and amenities that real working truck owners want.”

J.J. MillerCummins’ longtime head J. Irwin Miller first embraced the philosophy of bringing the best architects to Columbus when he took over the company where he first started as a mail clerk in 1934.

In the mid-1950s Miller started the Cummins Foundation to entice the school board to build quality buildings, offering to pay 10% of the costs to ensure the best candidates were hired.  The program worked so well it was extended to any new public buildings in Columbus, earning this small town the title of “Athens of the West.”

Columbus is a city as proud of its historic buildings as the newer ones.  While in town we were privileged to tour the 150 year-old Miller Bed and Breakfast not far from the Columbus Engine Plant.Jo Ann and Durhl at Columbus B&B
